ENHANCING THE READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS OF THE GRADE 7-D THROUGH CROSSWORD PUZZLE

This study determined the effectiveness of using Crossword Puzzle in enhancing the reading comprehension skills of Grade 7-D learners. This study was conducted at Tagudin National High School, during the 1st Semester of School Year 2022-2023.
The following were the salient findings of the study. The level of reading performance of Grade 7-D learners, their total mean gain score of their pretest was 5.8 “Fair” (F)” while the total mean gain score for their post test was 13.5 “Outstanding” (O)”. The computed mean gain difference from their pretest and posttest was 7.7 which describes the Crossword Puzzle as “Very Effective” (VE)”. The t-value was 18.06 which was greater than the tabular value 18.06 at 0.05 level of significance, thus; the null hypothesis is rejected.
Based on the findings of this study, the following conclusions were drawn. The reading performance of the Grade 7-D Learners of Tagudin National High School was improved through the use of Crossword Puzzle. There is a significant difference between the level of performance of the learners in their pretest and posttest after the intervention was applied. Crossword Puzzle is a very successful strategy or intervention for improving the reading performance of grade 7-D learners.
The researchers recommend the following: a) Teachers should employ Crossword Puzzle as a way to improve the students’ reading proficiency; b) Teachers can employ the Crossword Puzzle more frequently to improve their students’ reading performance and to create compelling and effective learning activities; c) Further study may be done to test the Crossword Puzzle in a broader scope of evaluation on its effectiveness as an approach for learning learners’ reading skills.
